Work Online From Home: Overcoming “Overwhelm”

One of the most common challenges for a new online marketer making his or her way up the Internet Learning Curve, is the really uncomfortable feeling of OVERWHELM! It’s not just that there is a LOT of information (which there is); it’s that the “hugeness” of it can trigger emotional responses and fears from deep within. When deeply rooted fears start taking control over what we think and do, the result can be either a kind of “paralysis,” or simply turning and “running for our lives.”

So…what’s up with that?

You see, the more unfamiliar–or unknown–something is to us, the more uncomfortable we feel. Our instincts tell us to “avoid pain” and “increase pleasure.” The unknown heightens a fear that we may lose control over pain and pleasure. But we also want to be reasonable and “make sense” of what is going on–that is another way of feeling in control. We get tangled up in these competing desires and fears. In short, we aren’t sure what to “do” to regain control and not knowing produces a feeling of OVERWHELM.

When we are uncomfortable in the extreme, we are likely to have one of three responses: an urge to flee; a surge to fight back; or feeling pulled in those two directions, we may just get immobilized and “shut down.” Is this crazy or silly? Not really; it’s just human.

Here’s the thing: as human beings, we actually have “three brains” nested together inside our heads–not just one. They work together, but sometimes they (like siblings in a small space)…compete. (Stick with me and this will all make sense in a moment.)

The “hind” brain (right at the base of the brain stem, not far from that place at the back of your neck where you can feel the edge of your skull) controls all of our “involuntary” body functions and systems (heart beat, breathing, digestion, sweating, etc) and runs on automatic pilot; we have no way to change the settings on that brain by thinking about it.

“Nested” on top of that is the “mid” brain; pretty much the same kind of brain that non-human animals have, and more like the one that our pre-historic ancestors would have had. It controls our most basic emotional responses (fear, pain, desire, pleasure, etc…) as well as the physical urges that go along with those things. This part of our brain alerts us to danger and controls the release of things like adrenalin and endorphins when an extreme situation calls for an extra “shot” of something to get us through alive. Think of it as the “survival” brain.

    The frontal, or modern, brain
(the big part that actually fills up most of your head) is the one that allows humans to reflect and think things through, make choices, decisions, be creative, enjoy humor, etc. Because we have this “third” brain–the one that sets us apart from the rest of the animal kingdom– we can talk ourselves out of or through the kinds of emotional (fear and danger-driven) responses that are still going to rise up from the mid brain. In short, we can learn and grow from our experiences, in ways that non-human animals cannot.

It is important to feel, and to sense real danger–of course. If we didn’t have that primitive mid brain doing its thing in there, we wouldn’t know enough to duck a blow, keeps our hands out of fire, and stop walking when we get to the edge of the cliff.

“Okaaaaay. If you say so, Thia…. And what, exactly, does this have to do with feeling overwhelmed as a new Internet marketer?”

Well let’s face it: the Internet–from the vantage point of an Internet Newbie learning how to use it for marketing
–is about as unfamiliar an environment as many of us are likely to enter in our lifetimes. The mid brain triggers the “fight or flight” response to the threat of the unknown. But the thinking, reflecting, frontal brain chimes in and tries to override the “irrationality” of the mid brain by keeping The Newbie from doing anything totally over the top and idiotic–like fight or flight.

The result of these two brains, each trying to “win” is that you just sort of get stuck in place, going, “OMG!” In other words, you feel overwhelmed, and are not sure what to do about it. Part of you wants to quit trying (flight) and part of you wants to tackle it and win (fight).

At the end of the day you really just want to stop feeling uncomfortable and regain a sense of control.

The best way to overcome overwhelm is to keep pushing through it. And the best way to do that is to make sure you have good support and good tools for learning how to survive–and then THRIVE–in your new environment.

It really doesn’t take as long as we think it will, to go from experiencing something as unknown and unfamiliar to known and familiar. Strangeness fades away quickly once we start recognizing where we are, what tools we have available, and how to use them to achieve our goals.

Hang in there. Don’t quit. I have a lot more to share and am here to be part of your support system as you scale the Internet Learning Curve.

The Stupidest Thing I Nearly Did And What Saved Me From Myself!

It’s not necessarily easy to talk openly about the really stupid things we do–at least it isn’t easy for me. But this is too important not to share, because (as a good friend reminded me), I am not the only one who has gone down such a path. In fact, it would be selfish–and totally contrary to what I am going to share–NOT to share this.

First, the secret that saved me: It is the single biggest thing that all the wildly successful online entrepreneurs know and DO. Simply this: Be of value to others. Be generous. Share with abundance. Be a fearless and unreasonable GIVER.

Second–the stupidest thing: I nearly forgot all of the above.

Period.

Okay, that probably needs a little more explanation, for those who are trying to make a living on line and scratching their heads (like I did before I “got it!”).

It took me a while to re-learn this (after starting to work online from home), which is really quite ironic. You see, for decades I was a leader and mentor in the nonprofit world, empowering those with low self-esteem because of lives filled with abuse and hurt to overcome limiting beliefs and behaviors, to take charge of their lives, their choices, and ultimately their future success.

In that context–the nonprofit, direct service world–it was second nature to me. I lived, breathed, and believed in what I was teaching and doing with every fiber of my being. As a result, people listened, followed and lives were transformed. I can’t even tell you how many–lots–thousands. I had no “power over” these people and didn’t seek to control them. Rather, I conveyed such a powerful belief in what I had to share about personal transformation and empowerment, that it emanated from me and that held people’s attention.

Because of what I believed, and shared freely, I provided others a way to grab hold of and believe in the same thing–their OWN power, courage, and ability to turn their lives around. It worked and lives changed. It was “viral,” (even before the Internet came into our lives and really changed the meaning of that word).

So how crazy is it, that when I finally made a life-shift from the nonprofit world, to the world of running a home-based online business, I nearly forgot all of that! Somehow, I had this weird (and totally misguided) notion that now I needed to turn into a whirling-selling-marketing-dervish, and be someone other than who I had been all those years.

I already held the key to success,
but I had this major mental disconnect that kept me from simply continuing to use that very key in my new venture. HOW INCREDIBLY STUPID that was. Scary-stupid.

But I’m not sharing this now to berate myself–or anyone else who has had trouble bridging that same mental gap. No, I can actually laugh my butt off today and feel exuberantly happy. Why? Because once I SAW what was right in front of me all along (“Thank you , Captain Obvious!!”), everything changed. From that moment on, I was more free–and successful– than I had ever been. And the best thing of all is that others around me started “getting it” too. Now they, too, are experiencing new levels of success and showing others how to do the same!

The key was to be myself; to offer and share freely, that which I already possessed. To “bloom where I was planted.”

The key for you? Well, it is not, and I repeat NOT, to be ME; it is to be YOU. Should you follow me? Absolutely–I have a lot to share with you and I’m eager to do that. But, whoever you are, you already hold the key to your own success. YOU have something of value to share that will establish you as a leader. What you need to do is identify it and then start sharing it freely–generously, with no restraint, and with a full heart. Just watch how the world will change!

So that is my story of the stupidest thing I NEARLY did
–I nearly forgot to simply be generous and share that which I already have in abundance.

This post is long enough now, so I will share more in future posts and videos about the exact steps I took–and that you can take too– to turn any situation around and go from mildly successful to WILDLY successful.

I look forward to meeting you on your journey to success!

Be amazed and amazing today,

Thia

P.S. I really shouldn’t sign off without sharing the number one game-changer that I have to credit with “waking me up” about all this. Successful people all around me had suggested it for a looong time but for some inexplicable reason (see above!), I didn’t act on it. Geesh. I can only roll my eyes now when I think about all the time, money, and energy wasted by not tapping into this MUCH sooner. Live and learn… (Follow me, yes–but not down the Stupid-Path! :-) )

How Long Does It Take To Start Making Money Online

“How soon will I start making money online?” This is a question I hear a lot, so I thought I’d write a bit about what I usually say to this, and also invite you to download a video that I made not too long ago telling about my own start up experience and how long it took me to start making money online.

So I’ve got to be honest and tell you right off the bat that I can’t answer that question for you. Since I don’t know you, I don’t have any idea how you approach life; how you handle working at things; or what you think it takes to succeed. It is the answers to those kinds of questions that will make the single biggest difference in when, or whether, you start making money in an online business.

In my video, I tell you my own story about getting started–part-time and with NO INTERNET MARKETING experience–and how long it took me to start making an income that I could live on. More importantly, I share a few of the things about how I approached my new online venture that made it all worthwhile for me.

Here are those things:

I was highly motivated! You see, I was still working full-time in a traditional job, but that was coming to an end. I only had about two months to make a successful transition from a steady paycheck to a self-supporting business income. Scary? You bet. But exciting too. I was fully charged and ready to do whatever it took!

I didn’t waste any time treating my business like a hobby. With a short transition period, no nest egg, no second income to lean on, and almost no reserves to cover the gaps, I HAD to hit the ground running.
I started part-time–while I was still working the other job–so that I could learn as much as possible before my other income ran out.
I followed the plan! “When in doubt…read the directions!”–remember joking about things like this? If ever there was a time for this to be the absolute right thing to do, this was it! I know about a lot of things, but Internet marketing was NOT one of them. I was fortunate to have joined a company (for this very reason!) that provides a step-by-step blueprint to its new members and marketers. The only way to “fail” was to simply not do what it said. Duh.
I kept doing what worked. And if something didn’t work, I either stopped doing it, or found out how to fix it so it would work. “Duh” again. I mean, this was really going so much more easily than I had even dared to hope.

That was really all that it took.

So here’s the HOT LIST!:

    Get good tools
    Learn how to use them

Trust the leaders and the tools

Put what the leaders teach into action

    Take MASSIVE action–every day!

    Commit to doing the work

    And…NEVER GIVE UP!

Once others begin doing business with you, watch the momentum build!. You begin morphing from student to leader, sharing what you know. Their success–as they follow your leadership–starts multiplying your own. Before you know it, you will not only have changed your own life, but you will find that you have begun making a difference in the lives of other people who shared your desire and determination to make an honest living online.

Be amazed and amazing–today and everyday!

Trackback Blog Tools: Remember This Or Be Forgettable!

Trackback blog tools are sooooo important: I remember the moment I found out that I was using trackbacks in my blog posts all wrong. Actually, to salvage a little self-respect, I should clarify that I had at least attempted to use this tool and no one got hurt–no one but ME, that is! But after watching this video I realized that there was so much more I could be doing with trackbacks to optimize traffic and exposure for my site and my business.

So after several clueless months of not using the trackback function at all,
and then using it (incorrectly) to poor effect, it was a game-changer when I finally learned how–and WHY–to use it for a real bangl! This is embarrassing to admit, but hey–progress is progress as one “scales the curve,” eh? My view is that we are all in this together and need to share what we’ve learned from our mistakes as well as our successes. Right?

This little blog post includes a terrific video tutorial with a mighty roar! I certainly want all my readers and “students” to know about it, because it is one of THE most powerful tools out there for reaching new audiences and driving more high-quality traffic to your site.

So a big shout out for Jack Humphrey and his Friday Traffic Report! Thanks, Jack. This tip on the trackback tool does us all a great service!

Happy blogging, folks. Now you can really be amazed and amazing–everyday!

Search Marketing: Romancing The Keyword

Search marketing is all about the keyword. That is, those specially tagged words that bring you and your dream customer together online. Lest that sound like a simple and fairly traditional coupling, better to get clear right now that online, keyword matches are more of a ménage à trois. You, your prospect, and the search engine are all in this together. For anyone getting nervous, or anything else, that is the extent of that metaphor.

Here’s how keywords work and what you need to do about it:

Your customer uses keywords to search for information, answers, or solutions.
You use them to describe a solution or an answer to a problem–whatever it is you are promoting.

The more nearly you can match the keywords that you use
to “answer” a question to the ones that your future customer uses to “ask” it, the more likely that you will be brought together by you-know-who.

That would be the third party–the search engine. You and the customer (the searcher) each make your keywords known to the search engine. The search engine’s job is to sort through billions of possibilities to find matches. Search engines are both generous and picky. They will deliver up as many matches as they can find; these often number in the millions. (Your goal is to get on page one of the results, and preferably in the top spot.) On the picky side, search engines are calibrated by the companies that own them, to screen out undesirable and irrelevant results so as to deliver only high-quality matches to the searcher. This is a good thing, but one that holds you–the marketer–to a high standard. (That’s your standard anyway, right?)

The search engine, it needs to be said, is only interested in satisfying the customer–that is, the searcher who enters her keywords and phrases into the little query box (think Google, Yahoo, YouTube, etc.) –not you (or me). We, as good marketers, must do three things extremely well then, in order to show up in the results that the search engine produces for our prospective customers:

1) anticipate the need/problem of the searcher and choose keywords that are highly likely to match the words–or at least the intention–of her query;
2) use these keywords in the titles, headlines, and/or subject lines of promotional materials (ad, article, video, email, blog post, etc.);
3) properly tag the keywords in terms and codes that the search engine will recognize. This is what makes it possible for the search engine to do its job for the customer.

Fortunately (for most of us!) the world is awash in geeks and so many of these tools that we use to produce ads, articles, videos, and such, have been made pretty user-friendly for non-geeks. The upshot–good news for Average-Joe-Marketer–is that by learning just a few tricks, we can accomplish what is needed with keywords, and function AS IF we actually understood what we were doing and how it all works.

What we do need to know, then, is:

    HOW to research and select good keywords;
    WHERE to put them; and

I’ll go into more detail on each of those areas in upcoming articles. (And be sure that you click on all the links in this article–this last one will show you my new favorite tool for SEO!)

Happy marketing!

Internet Marketing 101: How Is It Different Than Marketing Offline?

In many regards, marketing is marketing, whether online or offline; it is about bringing the customer (with a need) and the product (which fills the need) into direct contact so that a sale can be made. The key difference is in the tools for bringing about that contact; online tools are different than offline tools because the virtual environment of the Internet is different than the world of brick and mortar; of print and paper; of handshakes and eye contact.

Successful Internet marketers understand the virtual environment–the “eco-system” of the Internet–and are familiar with a wide range of tools and resources that belong to that environment. Using an offline tool analogy, if you want a nice, small, precise, round hole, you use a drill, not a hammer. If you just want to bust a wall down, put your drill away and bring out something big and blunt that packs a wallop. It is the same online: understand what you need to accomplish, and use the right tool to get the job done.

Some powerful and widely recognized Internet tools include things like Facebook, Twitter, and Google. But do you know what to do with them?; when and how to use them for marketing–and when and how NOT to use them? The wrong tool, used in the wrong way at the wrong time, can do more harm than good to your marketing efforts.

There are also some far less-well-known tools with funny names like ping, slug, tags, and trackbacks. Do you know what those are and how they can make the difference in whether or not you ever even show up online?

Do you know how search engines work? Do you know what language they speak and how to include the seo language they are looking for in your marketing messages and content? Do you know what it means to be indexed, and how/whether/why you want to be?

Successful Internet marketers have taken the time to learn and understand these things:

    How the Internet works;
    What kinds of tools exist online;

    How to use many different kinds of tools;

and (perhaps most importantly), Which tools to use for which tasks.

Equipped with the right tools, as well as the skills and knowledge to use them in strategic combination, good Internet marketers are able to get their message in front of the customer-base that is looking for it–every single time. Poor marketers just fling stuff around and hope that something lands where it will stick. Others are “one-trick- ponies”–that is, they have the idea that they can do one thing only and bring in “boatloads of cash.” Unskilled marketers waste time, money, and ultimately hope, simply because they lack the skills, understanding, and work habits to get their online marketing organized and working as a system.

The most worthwhile investment any new online marketer can make, is an investment in LEARNING how the Internet works, as well as the right use of the right tools to accomplish whatever it is you have set out to achieve online.

Learn, and you WILL BE both amazed and amazing!

So You Want To Work Online From Home: Skills Are Key To Success

In a recent post, Best Reason To Work Online From Home: There Is No Place Like… I extolled the creature comforts, as well as the good-economic-sense, of trading in a traditional job, or a brick and mortar business, for the lifestyle, freedom, and income that is possible when one learns how to use the Internet to make a living online–from home. I pointed out that this is an option that didn’t even exist a few short years ago.

“So, is there a catch?,” you ask. Hmmm. Well, not so much a catch as the matter of taking all of this seriously (even while your heart is thumping with excitement!) and going about your search for the right opportunity in a smart, professional, and well-informed way. I can’t emphasize the importance of that enough.

Here is some straight talk, gleaned from studying what sets those who are highly successful in starting and growing lucrative home-based online businesses apart from those who claim to do the same but struggle with one “biz op” after another, and never make it.

Those who have primarily used a home computer and the Internet for gaming, recreation, and entertainment purposes, may find that they have a harder time shifting to the idea of “work” when they try to sit down to work online from home. Also, individuals who are attracted–like moths to a flame– to offers and opportunities that are promoted as “no brainers,” learn the hard way that that is pretty accurate.

For 999 out of 1000 people,
“no brainer” also means “no money”; at least nothing you could live or retire on. So beware. If the primary features and benefits offered are those that would have you believe that you don’t need to know how to do anything except push an easy button, you will be disappointed. No skill, no smarts, no money.

You can no more expect to get rich as an “unskilled worker” online than you can in the offline world. Skills matter. Knowledge matters. There are now people making their fortunes online; in fact, in record numbers. But what they all have in common, is that they have developed and honed the skills necessary to work smart, and they have surrounded themselves with other leaders so that they have–and give–great support. Their fortunes are a result of well-developed skills, consistent effort, an entrepreneurial mindset, and a burning desire to succeed.

Almost anyone who is fully prepared to treat a new home-based Internet business as a real business, and who applies the same mindset, work habits, and desire to succeed in learning how to work online as they would to any other job or task they really cared about, has an excellent chance of making it–big. Making money online from home is not child’s play (nor grown ups play!); it is a new way to work; a new way to make a living in an Internet-driven economy. Those who truly succeed work at it; they bring integrity to all aspects of their business, and they step up as leaders to show others the way.

Lest this sound a bit daunting, a light note is that many new home-based Internet entrepreneurs report that the work–as well as the learning–is actually a lot of fun!

A final bit of good news is that there is a lot of excellent help available online and in professional online communities of entrepreneurs, to support and educate even the greenest Internet newbies. There are also a growing number of Internet business coaches available for hire–enough to go around, and enough for you to find one that is a great fit for you, your business and how you like to work.

So just be sure, as you come across all kinds of “offers” that you don’t just fall for the ones that sound “easiest;” rather, choose one that will teach you new skills–step-by-step; help you develop your online leadership; and provide you with all the support you need to work “smart” as well as comfortably from your home.

If you aim high enough, your business will do the same.

Be amazed and amazing,

Thia

Why Work Online From Home? There’s No Place Like…

There can be hundreds of great reasons to make the move from a traditional job, or even a brick and mortar business, to make a living online from home. My personal favorite is simply this: there is NO PLACE like home.

Think about it. Do you actually wake up and look forward
to rushing out the door each day only to spend 8-12 of your prime waking hours on the road or in an impersonal, stressful, non-soothing work environment? (I sure didn’t.) Do you look forward to the weekends and then spend them dreading Monday?

C’mon! These things would be what we call “clues.”

Some years back, there were not a whole lot of options when it came to owning and running a business from home: a daycare center, envelope stuffing, small appliance repair, taking in ironing, maybe some kinds of free lance work for artists and writers…. The point is that MOST of us didn’t really have good options for generating the kind of income it takes to live and also to provide significant lifestyle-freedom, from home. Rather, we had to “go to work.”

Technology and the Internet have changed all that. Because personal computers and high-speed Internet connections are available to virtually anyone, anywhere in the world, business is being conducted online and business owners can now work from the comfort of their own homes. Furthermore, even those who do not already have a business, can start one if they learn how to use the Internet to help educate and equip others who are–and will increasingly be–heading in this direction, to do so successfully. That in itself is a business opportunity.

Whoo-hoo!! Do you get how great this is? It changes everything. Today we have an entirely new option that didn’t even exist a few years ago.

So think about it. Working online from home is a lifestyle choice as much as a vocational choice. The Internet is the only sector of the economy that is not in recession. It is the only sector of the economy that fully belongs to the 21st century and the Information Age in which we are actually living. It is the only sector that fully allows people and families to reclaim a home-centered way of living and working.

Work-from-home-basics

It doesn't take much, to create the right space!

Your next career move–your financial and lifestyle future–could be as near as your own computer. (The one right near your coffee pot…your comfy chair…your family…your loyal pet…your favorite view…) Ah, there is NO place like home.

Be amazed and amazing today!

Career Change at Midlife: Considering Plan B?

Okay. Plan A-what you have worked at for years-just went down the tubes. What now? You could look for another version of the same thing you have been doing-just like the several thousand other people that have been laid off in your industry this year-or you could take a deep breath, step away from the crowd, and begin imagining your very own Plan B career.

How do you know if you have what it takes to succeed with something entirely different? That would take an entrepreneurial mindset. If you have that, your chances of success are well above average, but it is still up to you to make it work.

Here are eight sets of traits that have been identified as present in people that have successfully launched entrepreneurial careers at mid-life or later. Most of them found the greatest reward and satisfaction in starting their own businesses, rather than stepping back onto the treadmill.

So…how many of these do you possess?

    1) Integrity
    2) Responsibility and hard work
    3) Independence and self-reliance
    4) Drive to achieve
    5) Contagious and indomitable energy that attracts others
    6) Health and wellness in body, mind, and spirit
    7) Imagination and trust in one’s own decisions
    8) Leadership and management

You don’t even need to possess all of them to the max; if you can say “Yes! That describes me!” to at least 5 and the other 3 are things you aspire to, then you most likely have what it takes to succeed with a Plan B Career.
