When I decided that it was time to take a flying leap out of my 30-year career in nonprofit management, and let my inner entrepreneur take control of the parachute, I had a few things to learn! Some of them I anticipated, and others came as surprises–all, however, came together to get me to the terrific place I am today. That is what I want to briefly share with you.
I had long expected to “work for myself” in my next career chapter; it had not been entirely clear to me, though, what that work would be and how it would fit with my interests and priorities by the time I got ready to take the plunge . The “do or die” moment finally came for me early in 2009. It was time to just take a deep breath and make the shift from executive/employee to entrepreneur. Even though I didn’t yet have a fully developed business plan (to say the least!), I was SO over my job and in need of some serious self-care, that I decided to commit myself to the change before I had the Next Big Thing lined up. That is a clue how beyond-ready I was for a new life-phase!
Since I wasn’t giving myself a long lead time (about three+ months), nor did I have a cushy bank account to tide-me over through a long business-start-up phase, I knew I was going to have to position myself for almost immediate financial success, and then work out the long-term details and tweaks to my business once I was on solid ground. With that in mind, I decided to go looking for a “business opportunity” online (something I had neverpreviously imagined doing!). It felt positively indulgent…a little wicked…and was the beginning of my bust-out-and enjoy-life-to-the-fullest-again phase. Eee–HA!
It wasn’t actually too long before I found the solution that was the “answer to my prayers.” You will have several opportunities here at Thia’s Place, to learn more of the details about that. So let me just describe a few of the facts that guided me, because they might also ring true for you!
I knew that using the Internet as a business platform and “workplace” would allow me maximum flexibility to do business from home, from my favorite wi-fi cafes’, or on the road (because I love to travel and that was also high on my must-have-list for this phase!);
I knew that marketing my business–that is, getting whatever it was that I wanted others to sign-up for, purchase, support, or buy-into, in front of the exact people ready to take that action–was the key to being successful;
I knew that in the global age of the Internet–that is, NOW!–I would need to market any business online if I was going to be successful with it;
(Finally) I knew that I knew SQUAT (zip, zero, zilch) about Internet Marketing (gulp) and so had better put myself back in learning mode and figure out how best to get up to speed!
It turns out that knowing what I LACKED (time, start-up money, and Internet marketing savvy) provided me with the best information possible, for getting to my solution! It helped me focus in a realistic way.
When I found a company offering me membership in a learning community of creative, generous, and supportive Internet entrepreneurs–many of whom were also midlife and succeeding with brand new business ventures–I felt like I had come home! I joined.
When it turned out that this company would not only teach me everything I needed to know about the Internet and how to market like a PRO there, but would also provide me with a high-end product line to generate excellent income while I was hard at work mastering the art of Internet marketing, I had to pinch myself. It seemed too perfect. What was the catch?
I couldn’t find one. I read. I listened. I talked with others. I researched the company and read reviews. The only negatives I ever came across were those skanky kinds of things that some insecure competitors say in an attempt to get you to buy THEIR products–a disreputable form of marketing that this company will not allow (thank goodness). I could see through those.
Cutting to the finish (or at least the present), Thia’s Placeis the happy outgrowth of my former life as a career counselor and business development mentor within the nonprofit sector, brought up to date and reaching far more people on the Internet. And what’s even better, I am now able to introduce others–like you–looking for solutions to similar midlife career and life challenges, to the same opportunity and business solution that helped me solve my problem.
