This is the smartest echo I’ve heard yet coming from the bottom of the long-term-unemployment well. But first, a little background…
There are still 15 million Americans out of work, and 6.5 million (about 40 percent) have been in this situation for at least six months. Some are now going on two years.
That is a long time and a lot of competition for jobs; especially given that so many lost jobs are not even coming back. The times have simply changed and Americans are having to figure out how to change with them.
Many of these job searchers–probably most–use the Internet from home to search for jobs, submit resumes, and network with other job seekers, friends, and family. They are getting really good at using the Internet for all kinds of things.
With that in mind, here’s the really smart thing:
A few–and I do mean just a FEW–have figured out that with only a bit more time in front of the computer, and a handful of new skills (which they learn online), they can turn their down time into income-generating time–without ever leaving the comfort of home! By that I mean, they are using the Internet to make a living online for themselves and their families, even while (some of them) continue to search for employment outside the home. It’s a brilliant strategy.
As one fellow recently told me,
“I saw someone else I used to work with doing it and I said, ‘hey–will you show me how you do that?’ He did, and so I figured I might as well give it a try too. I mean, what did I have to lose? I was home anyway, and learning how to use my computer this way, gave me a reason to get up and feel good again–like I was actually ’somebody’ again. And the money [laughs]…if this keeps up, I may never go back to a regular job again. I’m actually getting to know my kids, for the first time in years. How do you put a price on that?”
How smart is that? I’d say VERY smart. And “why not?”, when you think about it.
If you, or someone you know or love, is among the long-term unemployed in the world today, pass this article along to them. It just might get them thinking outside the it-totally-stinks-to-be-broke-box. and help them find a way to make their own misfortune, pay. Finally.
Be amazed and amazing,
Thia
